![]() If you already own Layers of Fear, Inheritance is a nice low $4.99 add-on through Steam, or if you’re new to it, you can pick up the set for $22.99, shaving a couple dollars off of the price of each bought separately. Filling in the entire tale is still a puzzle, but completing each of these gives some great insight into the primary title’s own workings. It’s a touch on the short side, but makes up for this a bit by presenting three possible endings. ![]() Putting it simply, if you enjoyed Layers of Fear and wanted more, Inheritance is exactly what you’re hoping for. Several all-new pieces of the story also play in, of course, especially focused around the painter’s relationship with his daughter, and his desire to see her flourish as an artist in her own right. ![]() A fresh perspective does a lot to peel away at the clearly-distorted view of events presented from the painter’s own mind, and there’s quite a bit of exposition that dives into things you’ve already seen. $4.99 might seem steep for a little over an hour of gameplay, but when you factor in the multiple endings, attention to detail, and the fact that you can probably stretch the gameplay a little longer than my cowardly run-through, it’s worth it.For those familiar with Layers of Fear, Inheritance follows well behind the primary story. It’s creepy as all hell to begin with, just throw me a bone! Luckily, the majority of the game doesn’t use this mechanic. One other horror trope that I could have passed on was the “flashlight only” exploration of the mansion. It lends itself nicely to the new perspective, but I think we would have “gotten it” just fine were it not used at all. The GoPro-esque distortion of the camera is neither here nor there. Troubled by the memories of her upbringing, she returns to her childhood home to seek. You play the bulk of the game from a child-size angle, mostly through flashbacks triggered by interacting with certain objects. Layers of Fear 2 is a first-person, psychological thriller, horror video game with an emphasis on exploration and story. The story of Inheritance is told from the perspective of Layers of Fear ’s nameless painter’s daughter. The story falls right in line with the “WTF-ery” of the base game, but from a fresh perspective - literally and figuratively. While my play time was only an hour, I’m certain I missed a few pickups and you can also get multiple endings, which I feel is a decent level of depth for a quick DLC. Layers of Fear: Inheritance expands the plot from Layers of Fear and tells the story of the painters daughter, who comes back to her. My playthrough clocked in at around 1 hour, which feels somewhat short, but the story isn’t any less rich. So if you loved the art of the first game, nothing is lost here. The ambient noise, soundtrack, and gritty textures all lend themselves nicely to the “get me out of here, but also let me look around for a second” beauty of the game. And while we’re on the topic of creepy houses, LoF/Inheritance’s atmosphere consistently put me in a state of restlessness. But, most importantly, it keeps me from fumbling around with fetch quests in a creepy house that I’d rather not be in at all. Not being able to backtrack saves a lot of frustration and keeps the story moving along. ![]() The pace and pathing (doors locking being you) are the same as well, a feature I very much enjoy. First person, door-opening, document-reading, object-grabbing exploration awaits. If you’re familiar with the base game, the mechanics are all the same. To my delight and surprise, Layers and Inheritance are extremely intriguing, atmospheric and, ultimately, super-doable - even for a horror-noob like myself. Not being one for (too much) horror, I feared the worst and wanted to get it all done as quickly as possible. Layers of Fear: Inheritance expands the plot from Layers of Fear. I played the DLC fresh off the heels of the base game. I pull it open and enter what was once a place of solitude turned nightmare. In Inheritance, you pick up the story as the painter’s daughter, returning to said house years after the events of the first game and coming to grips with your family, father, and childhood. Can she forgive her father, or will she resent all that has happened Relive her experiences and witness the full scope of the tragedy that has swallowed up the family. In the base game, you play as a painter who must navigate through an ever-changing house of horrors, piecing together your greatest work of all time. Expanding the plot from Layers of Fear, Inheritance tells the story of the painter’s daughter coming back to her childhood home to face her past. Layers of Fear: Inheritanceis the first DLC available for the psychological horror game of the same name, Layers of Fear. Bloober promises that it will build on the foundations of the original Layers of Fear, Layers of Fear: Inheritance, and Layers of Fear 2, but will 'include an expanded plotline and gameplay. Layers of Fear: Inheritance might not offer hours upon hours of gameplay, but it makes up for that with an intriguing story told from a fresh perspective.
